About this Route

Oslo & Oslofjord Cycling Guide

A classic 78-kilometre loop from the Oslo Opera House through the rolling countryside of Follo and Vestby. The route follows the old Mosseveien south past Tusenfryd before climbing onto Kongeveien — a quiet local road on rolling terrain with virtually no traffic.

Through Ås and on to Vestby, the route turns west onto Drøbakveien — another beautifully quiet road with stunning surroundings. Klommesteinveien carries you past open farmland before the familiar landmarks of Kiosken på Nesset (soft ice cream stop), Vinterbro and Tusenfryd signal the final run back to Oslo.

78 kilometres with 743 metres of climbing — a perfect mid-distance loop for a weekend morning ride from the city.

The Vestby loop is one of those routes I keep coming back to — quiet roads, good flow and a real sense of getting out of the city. At 78 km it sits in the sweet spot between a solid training ride and something you can actually enjoy rather than just suffer through.

The opening stretch down old Mosseveien is flat and fast — a good warm-up before the route turns inland past Tusenfryd and onto Kongeveien. This is where the character changes completely. The roads become narrow and quiet, rolling through classic Follo farmland with virtually no traffic. It is the kind of cycling that reminds you why you started riding in the first place.

If you need supplies, Ås at around 40 km has shops — worth a quick stop before heading further south towards Vestby. The western loop via Drøbakveien and Klommesteinveien is the hidden gem of this route: open farmland, sweeping views and hardly a car in sight. You can also add a detour to Drøbak if you want extra kilometres or a coffee stop by the fjord.

One of my favourite medium-distance routes out of Oslo.

Kilometre by Kilometre

0–20 km: Oslo to Tusenfryd via old Mosseveien

Leave the Opera House heading south on the old Mosseveien. Flat and fast through the southern suburbs. Past Ekeberg and Nordstrand before reaching Tusenfryd.

20–35 km: Kongeveien — quiet rolling roads

After a short climb past Tusenfryd you turn onto Kongeveien — a beautiful local road with rolling terrain and minimal traffic. Classic Follo cycling.

35–50 km: Ås and on to Vestby

Roll through Ås — there are shops here if you need supplies. Continue south on the old Mosseveien to Vestby before turning west.

50–65 km: Drøbakveien and Klommesteinveien

Drøbakveien is one of the highlights of the route — very little traffic and beautiful surroundings. Klommesteinveien carries you past sweeping open farmland back north.

65–78 km: Return via Kiosken på Nesset and Vinterbro

Kiosken på Nesset is the soft ice cream stop on the return — don't miss it. Past Vinterbro and Tusenfryd before the familiar old Mosseveien carries you back to the Opera House.
