About this Route

Mallorca Cycling Guide

One of the most beautiful coastal routes on Mallorca — a 77-kilometre loop from Palma along the spectacular southwest coastline, through glamorous harbour towns and back through authentic Mallorcan countryside.

Leaving from Paseo Marítimo in Palma, the route immediately tackles Coll de Sa Creu — a 5.8 km Cat 3 climb that gets the legs working from the very first kilometre. The reward is a fast descent down to the coast, where the route then follows the stunning southwest shoreline westward through Cala Major — where the Spanish royal family have their summer residence — past the fashionable enclaves of Illetes and Portals Nous, through Palmanova and Santa Ponça.

Port d'Andratx is the jewel of the route: one of Mallorca's most beautiful harbour towns, perfect for a coffee stop watching the superyachts. From Andratx the route turns inland through Es Capdellà — authentic Mallorcan villages surrounded by olive groves and almond trees — before the descent back to Palma with the city's iconic cathedral visible in the distance.

We rode this on the day we arrived in Mallorca — based on the west side of Palma, which gave us a perfect start right out the door.

The route begins immediately with Coll de Sa Creu — known locally as the Military Climb, named after the large military base at the foot of the climb. No warm-up, straight into it from the city. The climb winds through forested terrain with hairpins and almost no traffic. A proper opener.

After the descent to the coast, the route follows the southwest shoreline westward. This is glamorous Mallorca — Cala Major where the Spanish royal family spend their summers, the fashionable enclaves of Illetes and Portals Nous, superyachts in the marinas. The riding here is enjoyable but busy.

Port d'Andratx is the jewel of the route. One of the most beautiful harbour towns on the island, and you can tell from the size of the houses and boats that serious money comes here. We stopped for lunch — good selection of restaurants and cafés right by the water.

From Andratx the route turns inland through Es Capdellà. The contrast is immediate — quiet narrow roads, olive groves, almond trees, almost no traffic. The Es Capdellà climb is a fine one: smooth asphalt, steady gradient, Galatzó mountain above you. A completely different Mallorca from the coast.

The final descent back to Palma with the cathedral appearing on the horizon is a satisfying finish to a varied day.

Kilometre by Kilometre

0–10 km: Palma — Coll de Sa Creu

Leave Paseo Marítimo and immediately begin climbing Coll de Sa Creu — 5.8 km at 5.3%. This is not a warm-up climb; it comes straight out of the city and demands attention from the first kilometre. The descent on the other side brings you down to the coast.

10–45 km: Coastal road to Port d'Andratx

Once on the coast the road follows the spectacular southwest shoreline westward. Pass Cala Major and the royal summer palace, through Illetes, Portals Nous, Palmanova and Santa Ponça. The section through Peguera and Camp de Mar is among the most scenic on the island. Port d'Andratx is the natural café stop — watch the superyachts and take in the harbour.

45–60 km: Andratx to Es Capdellà

Turn inland from the harbour and climb through the real Mallorca. Quiet, narrow roads through olive groves and almond trees towards the village of Es Capdellà. The Es Capdellà–Glilea climb is 6.7 km at 4% — a steadier, more rhythmic effort than the morning's opener. Galatzó mountain towers above.

60–77 km: Calvià to Palma

From Es Capdellà the route swings through the village of Calvià before the long descent back towards Palma. The city and its famous cathedral gradually appear on the horizon as you roll back to the finish at Paseo Marítimo.
