Sandefjord — Larvik & Stavern Loop
About this Route
← Vestfold Cycling GuideA gem of a route for road cyclists in Eastern Norway — connecting three of Vestfold's finest coastal towns in a single loop from Sandefjord. Maritime history, Viking heritage and some of the best cycling roads on the Sunshine Coast, all in one day.
The route rolls westward from Sandefjord harbour through the green Vestfold countryside to Larvik, passing Bøkeskogen — Norway's largest beech forest and the world's northernmost — before continuing out to Stavern, the jewel of the route. The charming old naval town, with its white wooden houses, galleries and irresistible summer atmosphere, is pure cycling idyll. A side trip to Nevlunghavn is strongly recommended — one of the most beautiful spots on the entire coast, with excellent food options.
The return winds back along the northern shore of Viksfjord through skerries and small boat harbours, through the historic farming landscape of Tjølling — where Kaupang, Norway's first Viking Age town, once stood — before rolling back into Sandefjord. Rolling terrain throughout, well-maintained roads and a profile that rewards good rhythm over raw power.
When someone asks me what to ride in Vestfold, this is the route I point them to. It has everything — coastal charm, Viking history, quiet inland roads and two of the finest small towns on the Norwegian coast, all packed into a single 131-kilometre loop from Sandefjord harbour.
The route heads south from Sandefjord through rolling farmland, passing close to the old Viking trading post at Kaupang and the shores of Viksfjord within the first fifteen kilometres. The terrain is gently undulating — typical Vestfold, never flat but never brutal — and the roads are well-maintained and quiet. By kilometre twenty you reach Larvik, where Bøkeskogen, the world's northernmost beech forest, sits just off the route. It's worth a short stop if you haven't seen it before.
From Larvik the road pushes south towards Stavern, arriving at around the thirty-kilometre mark. Stavern is pure cycling idyll — white wooden houses, galleries, a working harbour, and the old naval fortress at Fredriksvern Verft right on the waterfront. I stopped here for a coffee when I rode it, and it would have been criminal not to.
South of Stavern the route continues along the coast past Mølen, the extraordinary glacial moraine that juts into the sea, before reaching Helgeroa at around kilometre forty. This stretch is exposed and beautiful — you can smell the salt and feel the wind off the Skagerrak. From Helgeroa the route turns inland and north, beginning the long return leg.
The inland return is where this ride surprises you. The roads climb into the forested hills of western Vestfold, reaching the highest elevations of the day around 160-180 metres in the rolling terrain above the coast. The traffic thins to almost nothing, and the riding becomes rhythmic and meditative — long views, quiet lanes, the kind of roads you wish would never end.
The final thirty kilometres bring you back east through familiar Vestfold countryside, past Tjølling and its ancient farming landscape, before the road drops gently down towards the coast and the finish in Sandefjord. It's a long day, but the variety makes it feel shorter than the number suggests.
Kilometre by Kilometre
Leave Sandefjord harbour and head westward through the rolling Vestfold countryside. The route passes through green agricultural land before arriving in Larvik. A short detour through Bøkeskogen — the world's northernmost beech forest — is well worth the effort.
From Larvik the route heads south to Stavern, one of Norway's most beloved coastal towns. White wooden houses, narrow streets and a beautiful harbour full of summer atmosphere. A side trip to Nevlunghavn adds a few kilometres but is strongly recommended — a stunning coastal village with excellent food.
The return follows the northern shore of Viksfjord through classic Vestfold scenery — skerries, smooth rocks and small boat harbours. Rolling terrain with good rhythm and constant coastal views.
The final section passes through Tjølling, a historically rich farming landscape near the site of Kaupang — Norway's first Viking Age town. The roads here are quiet and beautiful before the familiar approach back into Sandefjord.
