About this Route

Western Fjords Cycling Guide

A stunning loop through the Western Fjords of Norway, starting in Dale — a charming small town at the inner reaches of Dalsfjorden. This 108-kilometre route takes you through some of the finest fjordside roads in Sogn og Fjordane, past the iconic landmark of Lihesten mountain and into the village of Hyllestad at the halfway point.

The route combines three distinct climbs with long stretches of quiet fjordside roads and spectacular views throughout. Hyllestad is dominated by the towering presence of Lihesten — one of the most recognisable peaks in the region — and offers shops and food stops before the return leg along the outer fjord.

With 1,687 metres of climbing across 108 kilometres, this is a proper hard day in the saddle through some of Norway's most beautiful landscapes.

Starting and finishing in Dale in Sunnfjord, this loop takes you deep into the Western Fjords hinterland — a route that earns every view. The terrain is quintessential Vestland: almost nothing flat, constant climbing and descending, and a raw proximity to fjord and mountain that the main tourist roads rarely offer.

Heading south from Dale, the road climbs immediately into forested mountain terrain before cresting and dropping toward Hyllestad and the outer fjord arms. When I rode this in July 2019, the descent on a clear summer day revealed Lifjorden below and Lihesten dominating the skyline — for me, the single finest view on the entire route. That mountain has been a navigation point for seafarers for centuries, and you understand why the moment you see it.

Along Lifjorden the riding becomes more intimate: small farms clinging to steep hillsides, waterfalls dropping directly onto the road, and the kind of quiet that only comes from riding roads that see more sheep than cars. Near Hyllestad, the route passes close to Kvernsteinsparken — a remarkable cultural site where millstones were quarried for over a thousand years and exported across Northern Europe.

In Hyllestad I stopped at the Spar for lunch — nothing fancy, but exactly what you need at the halfway point. On Vestland roads, eating outside a rural shop in the sunshine is part of the experience.

The return leg follows the fjordside roads back toward Dalsfjorden — long, deep, and still, with turquoise water stretching inland between steep mountain walls. The final kilometres roll north toward Dale with the fjord alongside. Back in Dale, Smakeriet bakery is the perfect way to finish — excellent pastries and exactly the kind of stop a long day in the saddle deserves.

Kilometre by Kilometre

0–10 km: Dale to Hålandsbrua

Leave Dale along the inner Dalsfjorden. The road follows the fjord with beautiful reflections on calm days. At around 8 km, Hålandsbrua til Stav arrives — a sharp 1.6 km climb at 5.0% to get the legs working early.

10–25 km: Towards Markhusstigningsørover

Rolling fjordside roads with increasing views of the surrounding mountains. At 25 km, Markhusstigningsørover — a 3.8 km climb at 3.2% — takes you higher into the landscape with panoramic views.

25–50 km: Into Hyllestad

The road descends and follows the outer fjord towards Hyllestad. The towering silhouette of Lihesten comes into view as you approach — one of the most dramatic landmarks in the Western Fjords. Stock up on food and drinks in Hyllestad.

50–100 km: Along the outer fjord

The return leg follows the outer fjord back east. Quiet roads, dramatic mountain and fjord scenery throughout. This is the highlight of the route — virtually no traffic and stunning views in every direction.

100–108 km: Opp Stavsdalen and return to Dale

The final climb — Opp Stavsdalen, 2.8 km at 5.5%. A tough finale after 100 km in the saddle, but the descent back into Dale is a fitting reward. The loop finishes where it started.
