Vall d'Ebo is climbed from Pego, and it gives you little rest: almost eight kilometres sitting between four and seven per cent the whole way. The steepest kilometre is the second, and the steepest hundred metres touches ten per cent. There is one easier stretch midway — use it, because it is the only break you get. Over the top you roll down to the village of Vall d'Ebo, where Restaurante Foc i Brasa sits. It is easy to ride past; take the lane downhill past the church.

The road

The road climbs through the gorge behind Pego and is narrower than the other climbs in the area. Two cars pass each other without trouble, but it is not wide.

There is little traffic. The road does not lead anywhere people are in a hurry to reach — it ends in a valley with one village.

The descent towards Pego is fast, and the upper switchbacks are tighter than the rest. Worth knowing if you come the other way.

The climb

It starts immediately. The first kilometre is already at 5.6 per cent, and the second is the hardest at 7.1 — that is also where the steepest hundred metres sits, at ten per cent.

The fourth kilometre is the break: 4.2 per cent, the only stretch that gives anything back. If you are tired, this is where you recover.

The last four kilometres settle between five and six per cent and stay there. Nothing brutal, but nothing that lets go either.

The top comes abruptly: the road flattens, and the valley on the other side opens below you.
