La Fustera sits just outside Calpe and is usually the first climb of the day. Four kilometres at barely five per cent, with nothing that asks you to get out of the saddle. The steepest kilometre is the second, and even there it is only 6.4 per cent. It is good for getting going: hard enough to warm up, short enough that nothing is lost. Look back on the way and you have the coast behind you.

The road

Fustera is a coastal road, not a mountain road. It rises from Calpe over the ridge towards Benissa, and you are never far from houses.

That means more traffic than on the inland climbs, especially in the morning. The road is wide enough for it, but this is not where you get the mountain to yourself.

At the top the road carries on inland towards the Xaló valley. Fustera is rarely a destination — it is the way out of town.

The climb

The first kilometre is the gentlest, around four per cent. Enough to lift your heart rate without asking anything of you.

The second is the only one that stands out: 6.4 per cent on average, with the steepest hundred metres a little over eight. Enough to notice if you started cold, not enough to force a decision.

The last two kilometres settle back to around four and a half per cent and stay there to the top.

The whole climb takes about a quarter of an hour. It is a warm-up, and it should be ridden as one.
